Surrealism in Campaigns

Surrealism is art that is unusual. It is unexpected and sometimes seen as disturbing, because some artists create designs that are gory and some use juxtaposition, for instance, a child eating a tiny human. Children are seen as innocent, but the use of blood and doing something sinister, and deranged like eating a human creates a huge contrast, and that appeals to an audience. The aim of surrealism is usually to make people interpret its meaning, to make people think. If a poster for a campaign uses surrealism art, it will be remembered, and in turn, make people buy the product that the campaign is advertising or attract a larger audience for a social issue that the campaign is focusing on.

LI(f)E by Lex Drewinski

The 'LI(f)E' design was created to make people think about how much Facebook consumes peoples' lives. Almost everyone uses Facebook, and there are a significant amount of accounts; around 2 billion.
This is an image that is not too difficult to understand, as the Facebook logo is easily recognisable but there are two or more ways of interpreting it. To me, the image conveys that using Facebook shows that we have no life, even though we claim that we have a life. Or it could mean that our whole life revolves around Facebook, quite literally, as the letters are surrounding the Facebook logo. It appeals to an audience, because it is easily recognisable as the Facebook logo, and because of the colour blue. Additionally, it is a spin on words like there's an image (in this case, it's the logo) instead of the actual letter.

This design was created based on the story of the criminal, Roberto Succo who committed suicide in 1988. He was sent to a psychiatric hospital because he was mentally ill, so the design conveys his story through the use of metamorphosis art. The gloves could possibly represent the gloves that the staff at the hospital had to wear. The blood on the hands is due to the murder of his parents and other people as well. The use of this disturbing, yet interesting imagery, appeals to an audience, as it is eye-catching. I like how it transforms smoothly from a pair of gloves to bloody hands, hung on a rope to leave the "gloves" to dry. One of my interpretations of this beautiful design, is that it's almost as if the artist is communicating that to Roberto, killing people was as simple and insignificant to him as leaving clothes to dry on a rope.

This poster was created for a play called Stanislaw Ignacy. The small skulls covering the man's head and his eyes are appealing because it is unnatural, yet artistic. It seems that this targets an audience that have a keen eye for art and theatre. The colours of the skulls are primary colours and they stand out and look nice on the complexion of the man. The colours compliment each other.

The image is very appealing because it's realistic and unrealistic too. It's realistic, because the man's neck, clothes and fish head look real, but it is also unrealistic because a fish head is something that is psychically not achievable, which makes it abnormal. Therefore, it is a piece of surrealism art. This is a powerful image because it is eye catching and makes the audience think. The tagline and picture link together. To me, this poster implies that if we continue to pollute our planet, we too will live like fish, surrounded by toxic air. This is a good thing because it is a design that will be remembered and it has a different, imaginative take on persuading people to take care of the earth. The drawback of this design would be that it can be unfathomable to some people, and not everyone will get the message of the design. Even I am unsure of what exactly it implies, however, I do have my own interpretation of the poster.

My first attempt at surrealism art
Of course, this isn't a great outcome, but it uses juxtaposition as it is a baby with a wolf head.
