Flea and Jonah and the Whale
Flea
Characterization: we learnt that she is a teenager of lower and working class in society, because of the way she talks the teenagers around her talk. Her costume also portrays that. The way she moves her hands show that she lives in a place were there are young teenagers of the lower and working class. She’s wearing a red and white stripped bobble hat which was done purposely as it links with Finding Walli, suggesting a thought of where is Flea?
Social issues: Drug abuse, poverty, and domestic violence
Genre: Social realism short film
My overall rating: 6/10
Jonah and The Whale
Narrative structure: it was comical about a serious issue which I don’t find appropriate but it did make me laugh, and since it’s a student’s
Characterisation: When we first see the main character, he is wearing a white shirt and black trousers, which makes it look like he is a student or works in an office. Since it is unclear which one it is, that tells me that the costume needed improvement for the audiences' understanding. Perhaps, he could have worn blue trousers to indicate whether or not he is working or a student. It seems to me that he works in an office of some sort, because he is not wearing a tie, but he looks like he doesn't attend high school. He looks old enough to have just graduated University, or working part time, whilst studying at University or not studying, and just working. His mannerisms suggest that he is unhappy and possibly depressed.
Social issues: suicide
Genre: short comedy comedy film. It could be a dark comedy if it was more comedic, and more gruesome in my opinion.
My overall rating: 3/10
Today I learnt a sub genre of drama, and it is Social Realism.
